20 June 2008

Shoppers and residents are invited to a free music and dance festival at Beckenham Green. The “Picnic in the Park” event will be the first and largest event of its kind to be hosted in Beckenham. With artists performing a variety of music including jazz, acoustic pop/rock and opera, and local dance groups demonstrating everything from ballroom to belly dancing, plus children’s attractions and food and drink stands, it’s a weekend not to be missed. “Picnic in the Park” is on Saturday 5th July from 12 noon until 8pm and on Sunday 6th July from 11am until 4pm.

“This event promises to be a showcase of the best in local music and dance. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a fantastic weekend. Bring a picnic or treat the family to something from the wide selection of food and drink that will be available” said Nicola Musto, Beckenham Town Centre Manager.

On Saturday there will be performances from The South London Jazz Orchestra, the Bromley Youth Concert Band, Opera from duo Bellezza and also Emma Joyce. Plus funk jazz from the Rex Hipple Band, acoustic pop/rock from The Nites and The Sneeky Band and alternative rock from Rumblefish.

On Sunday, to coincide with the national week long event ‘The Big Dance’, there will be dance performances of all kinds. Everything from street dance, ballroom, belly dancing, line dancing and flamenco will be performed by local dance groups, dance schools and fitness centres. The Big Dance is a celebration showcase of dance in all its styles and forms and is open to everyone to join in.

For the younger ones, there will be children’s rides, a bouncy castle and face painting.

With an array of mouth watering food and drink stalls to buy from, including barbeque food, Thai and Mediterranean dishes, those in need of refreshment are easily catered for.

Throughout the weekend Fitness First, the event’s main sponsor, will be on hand to give advice on health and fitness. They will also be providing free fitness checks and giveaways. In addition, representatives from the Council will be available to give help and advice on community safety, street services and parks issues.
