main content Bromley Town Twinning Association

To know and understand each other better... that is the original idea behind the Town Twinning movement, which was born in Europe shortly after the Second World War. Nowadays twinning brings together municipalities throughout Europe.

Twinning provides the opportunity to find out more about the daily lives of citizens in other European countries, to talk to them and exchange experiences and to develop joint projects on issues of common interest, such as local integration, the environment, economic development and cultural differences.

Details

The London Borough of Bromley has been twinned with NEUWIED in Germany since 16th October 1987, when the Mayors of the two communities signed a charter in Bromley to ratify the partnership. Many contacts and friendships have been forged between the citizens of the two towns. The hospitality that visitors from Bromley have received in Neuwied has been overwhelming, and we aim to offer equally warm hospitality in our Borough. Unlike much foreign travel where there is little personal contact with the host community, town twinning specifically aims to build strong personal relationships and understanding between people of different countries and cultures.

The municipality of NEUWIED , population nearly 70,000, comprises the town of Neuwied, founded in 1653 on the east bank of the River Rhine where it is joined by the River Wied a few miles downstream from Koblenz, and nearby more rural communities mostly of earlier origin. It is conveniently located to visit the cities of Bonn and Cologne to the north, the wooded uplands of the Westerwald to the east, the attractive Middle Rhine to the south and the Moselle valley and volcanic Eifel to the west.

Bromley Town Twinning Association is an independent, self-financing organisation, which operates separately from the civic links between the two towns. In addition to hosting coach parties from a parallel twinning body in Neuwied and paying return visits in alternate years, we seek opportunities to meet Neuwieders in Bromley, Neuwied and elsewhere whenever possible, and to learn about life in Germany from well-informed public speakers. Social events have included dinners, garden parties, outings and Continental trips. We mount exhibitions in public venues, and offer illustrated talks and briefings about the twinning and Neuwied to local organisations.
