main content Temporary highway licences

You will need a licence if you wish to place a skip, materials, scaffold, hoarding or any other temporary item on or over any part of the road.  If you would like to apply for a licence, contact us for an application form, or alternatively download a temporary highways application.

Details

We will grant your licence once the location has been approved by an enforcement officer.  The officer may need to inspect the site, so please allow two working days for us to process skip and materials licences, and seven working days for scaffolding and hoardings.

As part of the licence conditions, flashing amber road lamps are required on items temporarily placed on the road at night and when there is poor daytime visibility.  Lamps can be obtained from your local hire shop.  If our contractor is called out to provide lamps, the licence holder could be charged up to £150 for this service.

Cost

Please note that a fee is required with each licence application.  Skip and materials licences are valid for a month; scaffolding and hoarding licences are valid for up to three months.

The fees for considering each application are:

Licence Cost  Licence period
Skips (one skip per application) £30 One month
Building materials £50 One month
Scaffolding £150 Three months
Hoarding £150 Three months
Large storage container £150 Three months
Roll on/roll off skip £150 Three months
