main content Managing our Town Centres

The town centres within the London Borough of Bromley play a significant role in providing employment, local services and entertainment for residents and visitors. Each centre has its own identity and role to play. The challenge is to make each centre different and sustainable.

Details

Bromley Council is keen to build upon the success of Bromley Town Centre and others across the Borough and to continuously improve the range of services on offer. The Council is also working hard with other agencies, through partnerships such as the Community Safety Partnership, to ensure that these areas are as safe as possible and that crime is kept at a low level.

Town Centre Management operates in twelve town centres across the London Borough of Bromley. It is managed centrally by a core team and employs dedicated Town Centre Managers looking after the towns of Bromley, Orpington, and Beckenham. Our remit is as broad as possible, to deal with all issues that might arise within a town centre at a strategic and local level. Themes that we work towards include:

  • safer town centres;
  • more accessible town centres;
  • better promoted town centres;
  • high quality streetscape and environmental initiatives; and
  • strong town centre partnerships.
In the smaller towns we have a policy of assisting local traders' groups to help themselves by offering advice, expertise and support wherever possible. These towns include the following:

West Wickham
Mottingham
Biggin Hill
Petts Wood
Hayes
Chislehurst
The Crays (Cotmandene Crescent)
Locksbottom

Further Information

Work is currently taking place to create a long-term vision for our town centre areas that will incorporate the themes of community safety, transport, environment and promotion. It is envisaged that this "vision" will play a key role in a planned economic strategy for the Borough.

Partnership work is key to the success and sustainability of the work that we do. We endeavour to work with retailers, businesses, local residents and other agencies to ensure a holistic approach to problem solving and improvement of the town centre areas and to make use of often limited resources.

We are successful in what we do and are continuously looking for new partners. Each Town Centre Manager is accountable to a steering group of local stakeholders and produces a three-year action plan. In the smaller towns we have a policy of working with local traders' groups to enable them to help themselves.
