Stay Safe - advice for young people
The good news is, Bromley is a very safe place to live! The chance of you being a victim of crime in Bromley is very low. By being prepared and keeping in mind some of the safety tips below you can make sure you stay safe wherever you are.
Staying safe
Before you leave your house always tell your parents or a responsible adult where you are going and what time you will be back.
By
registering your mobile phone you can ensure that if anyone gets their hands on it, it will stop working and be of no use to them.
If you use cash points, always be aware. Check there is nobody over your shoulder and always cover your hand when you enter your pin, even in shops.
Remember that by using mp3 players and mobile phones with headphones you stop being alert to what is happening around you.
Staying safe when travelling
When you are out and about you should always try and follow these steps:
- Don’t show off your mobile or mp3 player, keep them in your pocket/bag and keep your phone on silent.
- Make sure your valuables are stored somewhere safe, think about how easy it would be for a pick pocket to access them.
- Consider carrying a personal alarm with you. Free alarms and advice on how best to use them are available from us, see contact details below.
- Always try to travel with a friend.
- Plan your journey, try using the TFL journey planner to work out the best route to take.
- Don’t use short cuts such as alley ways which take you out of public sight.
- On public transport if you feel unsafe stay downstairs on buses or on busier train carriages.
Staying safe at night
If you decide to go out at night, try and find someone who will go out with you and stay with them at all times.
If you find yourself in a confrontational situation with someone remain calm, try not to react to their behaviour and show your maturity by walking away.
Remember, being under the influence of drink and drugs will make you an easy target. Help protect yourself by saying no. If you want more information visit the Frank website.
What should I do if I am a victim of crime?
In the unlucky event of you being a victim of crime most importantly you should contact the police.
If a crime is taking place right now or you are in immediate danger you should call 999.
If the crime has already taken place and you are not in personal danger it is still very important that you report this crime. This can be done by calling 0300 123 1212
If you feel you have been affected by the crime you have suffered, you can also talk to Victim Support.
