Bromley Domestic Violence Forum New Sanctuary Project
Bromley Community Safety Unit, in partnership with the Bromley Homeless Families Unit, are pleased to say that we have obtained grants that will enable us to start offering practical help to victims of domestic violence in the Borough of Bromley who are owner occupiers or who live in privately rented accommodation by helping them improve the security measures in their homes.
The important principle here is often overlooked. Why should a woman, who is a victim of domestic violence lose, through no fault of her own, security of tenure of her home and end up in bed-and-breakfast accommodation at a high rent? She could then face long periods of benefit dependency.
The purpose of our scheme is to help victims of domestic violence in Bromley, whether owner occupiers or private tenants, to stay in their houses by providing them with extra support and with financial help to increase their security within their homes and so preventing the need for re-housing them.
The security provided can take the form of fitting extra locks to doors and windows, strengthening doors or by installing fire prevention devices.
A Metropolitan Police Crime Prevention Officer will visit any domestic violence victim, who is identified as being suitable for this project. He will assess the security requirements in each individual case and will make recommendations as to the work required.
A local lock company, approved by the police, will then carry out the required installation work.
Domestic violence victims who may benefit from this scheme can be referred by any partner agency of Bromley Domestic Violence Partnership, such as the local police, the Bromley Domestic Violence One-Stop Shop or local welfare groups.
The scheme will be monitored and administrated by the Bromley Domestic Violence Coordinator, Dave Gaywood. Any queries regarding this project, or advice with regard to any domestic violence issue, can be obtained from him on 020 8313 4290.
