What is Junior Citizen Scheme?

Encouraging today's children to be the responsible citizens of tomorrow is the theme of the Junior Citizen Scheme. It is an imaginative way of teaching primary school children in Year Six how to deal with everyday dangers safely and effectively. It provides practical learning for youngsters who are shortly to make the transition to secondary school, while at the same time encouraging good citizenship and sense of community responsibility.

Children take part in inter-active scenarios that require them to make decisions about personal safety and the safety of others, while raising their awareness of danger and the consequences of criminal actions. Themes covered include mobile phone crime, road safety, train safety, drugs and alcohol education, fire safety and first aid.

How is the scheme delivered?

In Bromley each scheme runs for one week. Host schools provide accommodation for the scheme for the duration of that week and Year Six children from neighbouring schools are taken by bus to the host school. There are two sessions every day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each session can take 50 children. A total of around 500 children are seen during the course of one scheme.

On arrival the children are split into six or seven groups and will visit each scenario in rotation, each scenario lasts for 15-20 minutes to hold interest and concentration. A parent/teacher helper from the visiting school will accompany each group of children.

Who is involved in delivering the scenarios?

It is a joint initiative between Bromley Council and the Met Police, but also involves a number of committed agencies including the London Fire Brigade, The British Red Cross and Transport for London who provide the inter-active scenarios. Junior Citizen scheme is seen as a useful vehicle through which the various agencies can deliver their specific safety/community message.
