Bromley mentoring initiative
Under this initiative, mentors are adults from the local or business community who spend time talking to young people with the aim of motivating and encouraging them.
Eligibility
To be a mentor you should:
- be able to motivate and encourage young people;
- be non-judgmental, objective and supportive; and
- have time to offer.
The mentoring team offers a service to:
- schools;
- the local authority; and
- voluntary agencies.
Details
The aims of mentoring are to:
- improve self esteem and academic and social confidence;
- raise expectations of under-achievers; and
- provide positive role-models for young people.
The Mentoring Team:
- develops and delivers 'tailor-made' mentoring programmes for young people;
- provides advice and guidance to mentoring programmes already in existence; and
- recruits, trains and screens mentors from the local community.
Programmes include schemes for:
- disengaged pupils;
- youth offenders;
- young carers;
- young people leaving care;
- students on vocational courses; and
- vulnerable children.
A school or other agency can arrange for a young person, who is in need of additional support and assistance alongside their normal education, to obtain a mentor.
