Right to Read is a programme to promote the importance of literacy and the development of reading skills. We assist children in Bromley schools by offering them Right to Read partnerships with supportive adults from the local and business community.
The focus of Right to Read is to make reading fun, spending time on a one-to-one basis with a child to build their confidence.
Children respond positively to regular sessions and both partners gain from the relationship.
Benefits for all
Volunteers:
- enjoy meeting and working with fresh young minds;
- gain satisfaction from helping a child discover the benefits of being able to read;
- develop communication and listening skills;
- make a rewarding and satisfying contribution to their community.
Pupils:
- enjoy raised self esteem and confidence;
- demonstrate increased motivation and enthusiasm;
- gain improved literacy skills;
- have the chance to develop a relationship with a positive role model.
The Community:
- enjoys an improvement in educational standards;
- sees the profile of schools raised within the community.
Make it fun and you can make a difference
Do you:
- want to open a new chapter in a child's life;
- have one or two hours a week to give during school term time;
- want to help a primary school child, who lacks confidence in reading, learn to enjoy the wonder of words;
- want to share in our vision to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to learn to read and help to secure a better future for children who find reading difficult?
Then you should become a volunteer reading partner.
You do not need to be Shakespeare, or have a language qualification to participate in the programme. Enthusiasm, commitment and a love of words are much more important.
Full training is provided for all volunteers.
