Volunteering Programmes with Bromley Education Business Partnership
We have a range of activities to support children and young people in Bromley, in a primary, secondary or other setting.
The Education Business Partnership website contains a lot of useful resources and information.
Eligibility
We are always looking for people from different backgrounds and ages to help and act as role models. Full training and support are provided and volunteers would be expected to undergo the criminal records disclosure process allowing them to work with young people.
Details
Volunteers are linked with a pupil (7-10 years) from one of the participating primary schools. They visit the school on a weekly basis to listen to the child read and develop an ongoing relationship to encourage reading for fun and increase pupil confidence.
Our Number Partner volunteers are linked with two pupils (7-10 years) from one of the participating primary schools. They visit the school on a weekly basis to play specifically designed games aimed at increasing pupil confidence in mental calculations as well as promoting maths as fun. You do not need to be Einstein or have a qualification in maths to participate!
Mentors are adults from the local or business community who may be working, retired or not in full-time employment. They develop a relationship with a young person, spending time talking to them with the aim of motivating and encouraging. Sessions are usually fortnightly. In addition to pupils in schools, other programmes include: disengaged pupils, young carers and youth offenders.
Business ‘buddies’ are from the local or business community and may be people working part-time or retired from industry. They attend one-day events, usually in schools for students (aged 13 – 18), aimed at raising awareness of what employers are looking for and preparing the students for the world of work. ‘Buddies’ may work with a small group during the day or get involved in one-to-one mock interviews.
- Science and Engineering Ambassadors
‘SEAs’ are from the local or business community and may be people working, full time, part-time or retired from industry. They have a background in science, technology, maths or engineering and work with pupils from any age group on projects. ‘SEAs’ give anything from one day a year to six consecutive Saturdays to share their enthusiasm for their industry with pupils.
