What is the Common Assessment Framework?

The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) is a new, standardised approach to assessing children and young people’s needs and deciding how they should be met. It aims to help all of us whose work brings us into contact with children and families to identify children with additional needs and intervene much earlier to help them. The CAF is intended to be simple to use and is geared towards the practical delivery of support to children and young people.

Anyone whose work brings them into contact with children and families should have an awareness of the CAF and either know how to complete a common assessment themselves or know how to arrange to have one carried out. Everyone working with children should be aware of the sorts of situations that indicate the need for a common assessment. Every organisation offering services to children will need to ensure at least some of its staff are equipped to complete common assessments.

About the Bromley CAF Team

The CAF Team is based in Bromley Central Library.  Following the conclusion of a successful pilot, the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) will be introduced across Bromley over the next few months as part of the continuing agenda to deliver high quality and timely services to children, young people and families. The CAF Team is a multi-agency team consisting of colleagues with backgrounds in health, education, social care and the voluntary sector. The team has been set up to support the implementation of the CAF by offering advice, support and training opportunities to practitioners completing CAFs and/or acting as Lead Professionals.
