main content The Moving On to Secondary School (MOSS)/Choice Project

Bromley Children's Fund

The MOSS/Choice Project aims to help children, young people and their families feel more prepared and confident about the move from primary to secondary school. We do this by providing information, activities and support in consultation with children, young people, their families and schools.  Our service is then shaped around their suggestions.

Support for Children & Young People

The MOSS Project works mostly with children and young people in the last year of primary and the first year of secondary school. They are asked about the things they are looking forward to and the things they are worried about.   We also ask them about the type of activities they enjoy or would like to try.  Based on what they tell us we develop activities for individual children, small groups and whole classes.  These take place in schools, family homes or other places throughout the year, in curriculum time, after school and during school holidays. Examples of previous project activities include:

Photography, videoing, animation, murals, clay portraits, art, DJ, music making, street dance, rap, football, tennis, rugby, hockey etc.

All activities are free and have been developed to encourage children to express their feelings and to come up with solutions for their worries about the move to secondary school. The project also provides practical help, for example, travel training for new journeys and help with the organisational, social and learning expectations of the new school environment.

Support for Parents/Carers – Choice Advisors

The Choice Advisor Service provides support and advice for parents/carers making an application for a secondary school place for their child.

This service is required to be independent and provide impartial support and advice to parents/carers who:

  • live in Bromley and wish to apply for a Bromley secondary school or a school in another borough

    Or
  • live in another borough, but have a child in a Bromley Primary School, and would like a place at a Bromley secondary school

The project is driven by the needs and requests of parents/carers and aims to help them make a more informed preference for a place at secondary school. The service provided depends very much on what is asked for and could include support in: -

  • completing the application form for a Secondary School place (CAF); and
  • finding out about schools':

        o Admission policies
        o OFSTED reports
        o Oversubscription criteria
o Special needs policy and provision
o Uniform policy and obtaining help with cost
        o Ethos, specialisms and facilities
        o Curriculum
o Term dates & Times of the school day
        o Travel details
o Charging policies for school trips/ activities etc

Anyone can refer to the MOSS/Choice project including children, young people, families, schools or other professionals.
