Freedom of Information Act
Details
Individuals have a statutory right of access to their own personal information held by public authorities under the Data Protection Act. The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act extends that right of access to non-personal information. When an individual or organisation makes a request, we must confirm or deny whether we have the information. This is known as the duty to confirm or deny. Unless the information requested falls into one of several categories of exempt information, we must supply what has been requested. Any member of the public has a right to ask for information. If we say you are not entitled to it, we then have to prove that you are not. If we refuse to provide some or all of the requested information on the grounds it is exempt, we will explain the reason for doing so.
