main content Records management

Records management support the authority's work to comply with Data Protection, Freedom of Information and the Local Government Acts. Guidelines are in the process of being drafted as part of the Corporate Information Management Strategy and will include consultation with Council departments, the Borough Archives team and the Records Management Society of Great Britian.

The guidelines will reflect our understanding of the administrative processes that give rise to record creation and help in the management of such records. It is intended to cover the continuum of records and information from creation through to destruction or for retention for historical or research protocols.

The aims of the guidelines are to:

  • help identify records that may be worth preserving permanently as part of a local authority's archives;
  • prevent the premature destruction of records that need to be retained for a specified period to satisfy legal, financial and other requirements of public administration;
  • provide consistency for the destruction of those records not required permanently after specified periods; and
  • promote improved records management practices within local government.

As part of this piece of work, the London Borough of Bromley has created an retention, archiving and disposal schedule to support our commitment to records management.

The schedule is available to download in PDF format below.  It is in two parts.

Our records management policy and guidelines for retaining, archiving and disposing of records are also available to download.
