Councillor Brenda Thompson - Deputy Mayor of the London Borough of Bromley

Councillor Brenda Thompson has served on Bromley Council since first being elected to represent the people of Cray Valley East in May 2002. Up to the present, she has served on the Community Safety PDS (now known as Public Protection and Safety), the Adult and Community PDS, General Purposes and Licensing and on various working parties.

Brenda has lived in the Borough of Bromley since 1963. The move from Tooting became essential as her father was a civil engineer involved in the building of the Dartford Tunnel and it was easier and quicker for him to get to work. The family home backed on to the lake in the Bishop’s Palace grounds and her early recollections are of frogs migrating via the garden and being squashed by their boxer dog!

She was educated at Grey Coat Hospital in Westminster and went on to King Alfred’s College in Winchester where she trained as a teacher. She later gained a BA degree with the Open University. She has spent all her teaching career in the borough and for the past six years has taught history at Babington House, an independent school in Chislehurst.

She has always been interested in supporting local residents and for several years delivered Meals on Wheels for Age Concern. She attends local residents’ associations and is a member of the Safer Bromley Neighbourhood Panel. She is also a Governor of The Priory School which is now a sports college and has recently become a Governor of Bromley College.

She and her husband, John, have lived in the borough since they were married in 1970, in St Mary Cray and then Orpington since 1975. They have two children, Joanne and James, and two grandchildren.

Brenda’s interests include travel, reading and politics and her musical tastes range from Mozart to the Scissor Sisters!

She feels privileged in the extreme to have been asked to be Deputy Mayor of the borough and is looking forward to the year ahead.
