The first Mayor of the newly formed borough was elected in 1965 and each year the councillors elect one of their number as Mayor. The Mayor for 2009/10 is Councillor Douglas Auld.

Councillor Douglas Auld was elected to the Council to serve Petts Wood and Knoll Ward in May 2006. He is a firm supporter of Residents Associations and believes their views are an extremely valuable source of local information and ideas which should always be taken into account.

Douglas was born in Glasgow and educated at Hutcheson’s Boys Grammar School and the Stowe College of Engineering before joining Glasgow Police. He transferred to the Metropolitan Police where he served for nearly thirty years leaving as a detective superintendent leading major crime enquiries in south east London. Subsequently as an area manager he set up and managed a Securicor business in the same region.

He has lived in Orpington for thirty-seven years. His wife Pat was born in Orpington and is a senior social worker in Bromley. They have four children, all of whom attended schools in the Borough, and seven grandchildren.

His interests include athletics, football, the history of the first world war, competing with ‘Tess’ at dog agility events, gardening and the very occasional round of golf.
