European elections are held every five years .
The European Parliament elections took place on 4 June 2009 in the UK to elect members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to Strasbourg.
All 27 member states had elections from 4 to 7 June 2009 with almost 500 million European citizens eligible to vote. There are 736 MEPs, elected for a 5 - year term, of which 72 are British and 8 represent the Greater London area, including Bromley.

To vote in a European Election
- You must be 18 years or over.
- Your name must be on the electoral register otherwise you cannot vote. You can check that it is at the Electoral Services Office, Bromley Civic Centre. If it is not, staff will advise you on the procedure and timetable for inclusion.

MEPs represent the interests of local people and of Britain as a whole in the European Union, a group of 27 nations which work together on matters such as trade, economics and social issues.
