General elections are held every five years (or sooner if the Prime Minister chooses). The last one was held on Thursday 5 May 2005.

To vote in a General Election
You can check that your name is on the register by contacting Electoral Services at Bromley Civic Centre. If it is not, staff will advise you on the procedure and timetable for inclusion.

Who am I voting for?
A Member of Parliament (MP) who represents a local area (‘constituency’) in the House of Commons. Bromley has three MPs – one each for Beckenham, Orpington and Bromley and Chislehurst. There are about 650 MPs in all.
What do they do?
Individual MPs
- can act as a check on the power of the Government, by questioning its policies and, if necessary, voting against them in Parliament;
- help draft new laws (‘Bills’) for consideration by Parliament as a whole; and
- look after the interests of ordinary people who they represent.
