main content Public inspection of accounts

The rules governing the audit and inspection of local authority accounts are laid down in the Accounts and Audit Regulations 1996 and the Audit Commission Act 1998.

Local authorities are required to make their accounts, for the year ending 31 March, available for inspection by any interested member of the public.

The period of inspection is 15 working days prior to the date set by the auditor, with the actual dates for inspection published in the local press.

At the end of the public inspection any local councillor may raise questions or objections of the accounts with the auditor.
