main content Our standards of conduct

We are committed to working to the highest possible standards of openness, probity and accountability in accordance with our code of governance.

Councillors code of conduct

When they are elected, Councillors have to agree to follow a Code of Conduct  to ensure high standards in the way they undertake their duties. The Register of Interests of each of the councillors and co-opted members of the Council can be inspected at the Civic Centre address during our normal office hours.

Standards Committee

The Council has a Standards Committee which aims to promote high standards of behaviour and is made up of 5 councillors and 5 independent people. The committee is chaired by an independent member.
The agendas, reports and papers it considers are available on our meeting documents pages.

If you need to make a complaint

We want everyone to feel confident that we have an open and honest system of local governance and that our councillors maintain the high standards expected of them. If anyone - which can include an employee, a member of the public or even another councillor - feels that behaviour by a councillor or co-opted member of the Council may have fallen short of the required standard they need to tell us about this so our Standards Committee members can consider their complaint.

Complaint about a councillor

Our Complaint about a Councillor leaflet sets out what you need to do to raise an issue about councillor conduct with us, and you can look at guidance on our criteria for complaints. You will need to provide further information about the nature of the complaint, which part of the Code you think the councillor has breached and how, and, where possible, any supporting evidence you have.

Raising Concerns

We have a confidential reporting policy ‘Raising Concerns’ which can be used by employees and those working for the Council on Council premises as contractors, who are concerned that there may be something seriously wrong happening within the Council. Examples include breaches of the law, possible fraud and corruption, sexual, physical, verbal or financial abuse of clients.
