Council Tax is raised to help pay for local services. Every dwelling has been allocated to one of eight bands. The bill is based upon the valuation band of your property assuming two adults live there. If you are the only adult living in a property you will qualify for a discount of 25%.
Bandings are decided by the District Valuer of the HM Revenue and Customs, and although appeals against a banding can be made, the grounds are restricted.
