Is Bromley getting its fair share of local government funding?
No, that’s why the Council has been lobbying central Government about its level of revenue support grant and about the inequities of local government funding generally.
Here are the facts:
We are being penalised financially. This is not a new position.
- for the coming year the Council will again receive minimal additional revenue support grant (RSG). The cash increase of £1.2m is far less than inflation and other major pressures on social services and other areas such as environment.
- the Government will again ring fence school funding reducing the Council's flexibility to direct resources to where they are most needed.
- at a time of concern about local government funding generally once again we won’t even get the financial support given to other local authorities
- the average increase in RSG in England for 2008/09 is 3.5%
- the average for the London areas was 2.4%
- Bromley received the minimum 2.0%
This is at a time of increasing service pressures including
- adults with learning disabilities
- schools funding ring-fenced
- older people
- vulnerable children
- waste such as increasing cost of land fill sites
So what does each Bromley resident receive in revenue support grant per head compared to those in other London boroughs?
- in Tower Hamlets the RSG is £1023 per head, which is the highest of the inner London boroughs, compared to £210 for Bromley.
- the inner London average for RSG is £744.
- In Newham, which receives the highest RSG per head in outer London, the figure is £823 compared to £210 per head in Bromley.
- The overall outer London average is £387 per head.
- The overall inner London average is £744 per head.
