A Childminder is an Ofsted-registered child carer that works in their own home caring for babies and children from birth onwards. They are regularly inspected by childcare inspectors from the Early Years Directorate of Ofsted, and work to 14 national standards laid down by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and can be found on the DCSF website (www.dcsf.gov.uk). They must have a police and Criminal Records Bureau Check, be in good health and have demonstrated that they are a suitable person to look after children and can actively contribute to children's development and learning. They must also be insured correctly. All registered childminders are graded outstanding, good, satisfactory or inadequate when inspected and parents/carers can ask to read these reports during their initial visit.
What are the advantages of using a registered childminder?
You know they have been thoroughly inspected by Ofsted, have insurance and are supported by members of the Bromley Early Years team. Childminders can offer great flexibility; some are available for early morning starts and/or late finishes; some offer full-time and others part-time care. They offer a home environment and can often take the child to local clubs, social activities and local pre-schools or schools. They can offer more individual care as the maximum number of children under eight years old they can care for is six, and only three if under five years. They can offer continuous care from birth through pre-school, school and even into secondary education. They can offer school drop-offs and collections.
Cost
As a guide most childminders charge between £3.50 and £5 per hour per child.
