Transfer to Secondary School 2009
Before co-ordination, applications were made direct to schools. Some applicants received more than one offer and then took a long time to decide which offer to accept or decline. This delayed unwanted places being re-offered to other applicants who needed them.
The co-ordinated admissions system was introduced by the Government to put an end to multiple offers and to make the secondary transfer process easier for parents. The Bromley Admissions Team manages the process for Bromley residents and schools. Applications are centralised and made on one Common Application Form.
Bromley residents who have already been issued with their personalised Common Application Form can choose to complete and return this paper form or make an online application. Co-ordinated Admissions - important dates.
Eligibility
- A child is eligible to transfer to secondary school after completing Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum.
- For entry into Year 7 in September 2009 your child should usually be 11 years old, born between 1 September 1997 and 31 August 1998.
Bromley Secondary Schools
There are 17 mainstream publicly funded schools in Bromley. Two of these are selective (Newstead Wood School for Girls and St Olave’s School) and admit pupils on the basis of academic ability. The remaining schools admit pupils of all abilities. All schools have Foundation status, apart from one all ability school (Bishop Justus Church of England School) which is voluntary aided and admits pupils on evidence of a parent/carers’ commitment to a faith, some places to children from Bromley Church of England primary schools and the remaining places on proximity.
Bromley secondary schools are very popular, all receiving more applications than they have available places, and may not be able to offer to all who apply.
It is important that you include a school on your application that is expected to cover your address and not just the nearest. This will not affect your applications to any higher preference schools as each application is considered separately and at the same time. Bromley Admissions applies the results of your applications against your preference order to establish which school will be offered. This will be the highest on your list that can offer your child a place.
