In Bromley the school and its governing body are responsible for complying with legislation and the borough policy on school meals. The exceptions to this are Special Schools and Units where the responsibility remains with the Local Authority. Schools must make provision for all pupils and students eligible to receive free lunches and those who choose to pay for a lunch.
Details
All school lunches must comply with both the
National Nutritional Standards Regulations and Bromley's School Lunch Policy.
The Borough's policy for school lunches and milk was introduced, following consultation with all interested parties, at the same time as National Nutritional Standards regulations.
The minimum standards defined within the borough policy ensure that whilst complying with
national nutritional standards some areas are enhanced.
- Meat, fish and alternative sources of protein for primary pupils are enhanced by the requirement to provide at least two items throughout the lunch period.
- A choice of dessert must be available.
- A packed lunch facility must be available and must contain the four defined items to meet the regulations for main meals.
- Milk must be made available as an integral part of the meal.
- At least one of the main courses on offer must be served hot and be available throughout the lunch period.
The provision of school milk in addition to the requirements of the school lunch policy is at the discretion of each individual school. Schools that choose to operate a mid morning or pre school milk scheme can apply to join the EU scheme for subsidised milk through the Local Authority. They can also apply to reclaim the cost for the supply of milk for the under ‘5’s through the Welfare Food Reimbursement Unit or via the Local Authority.
The Director of Children and Young People Services determines the minimum policy for the provision of school catering and milk, whilst schools and their governing bodies determine individual school policies.
All pupils/students entitled to
free meals are entitled to a two course meal and a beverage as a minimum.
