The Local Authority funds four main types of mainstream schools. These are Community, Foundation, Voluntary Aided and Voluntary Controlled schools.

There are 74 primary schools in the borough. Of these, 53 are Community Schools, 11 are Voluntary Aided, 5 are Foundation and 5 are Voluntary Controlled. Sixteen are faith schools.
There are 17 secondary schools in the borough. Of these, 15 are Foundation and 2 are Voluntary Aided. Two are faith schools.
There are 4 special schools, 18 additionally resourced mainstream primary schools and 4 additionally resourced mainstream secondary schools in the borough for pupils with a statement of special educational needs.

In addition to these state schools, there are 13 independent schools in the borough.
