The Local Authority funds four main types of mainstream schools. These are Community, Foundation, Voluntary Aided and Voluntary Controlled schools.
- There are 76 primary schools in the borough. Of these, 55 are Community Schools, 11 are Voluntary Aided, 5 are Foundation and 5 are Voluntary Controlled. Sixteen are faith schools.
- There are 17 secondary schools in the borough. Of these, 15 are Foundation and 2 are Voluntary Aided. Two are faith schools.
- There are 4 special schools, 18 additionally resourced mainstream primary schools and 4 additionally resourced mainstream secondary schools in the borough for pupils with a statement of special educational needs.
In addition to these state schools, there are 14 independent schools in the borough.
