Eligibility
Babies and young children aged 0 – 5 who are delayed in their development and who are resident in the London Borough of Bromley.
Details
Bromley Portage, a registered service with the National Portage Association, is based at the Phoenix Children's Resource Centre. Portage workers meet regularly to share expertise. Liaison with colleagues from other agencies is given high priority.
Trained Portage Workers:
- work with children, in partnership with parents, in their home;
- devise small step teaching tasks to aid a child’s learning;
- help record achievement so that progress is appreciated and confidence built;
- give support, guidance and friendship.
Through the Portage service:
- family members can become involved in the teaching process;
- children benefit from learning in their home environment;
- the vital first years, when children learn most quickly, are used;
- parents meet other parents whose children also have learning and additional needs;
- the right of each child to be included and to participate in their community is supported.
Portage also provides:
- an Early Learning Group to support learning;
- a fortnightly play session for parents and children;
- the loan of equipment, books and toys from their library of specialist resources.
