Secondary transfer arrangements for pupils with a statement of SEN
When a pupil has a Statement of Special Educational Needs, their transfer to secondary school will be discussed at a special annual review meeting. Parents/carers are not required to follow the general procedures laid down for secondary transfer.
Details
- A review meeting will take place in Year 5 during the summer term at which a full discussion about a child’s future secondary placement will take place.
- At this meeting there is the possibility to discuss the various options available on transfer to Key Stage 3/secondary school provision with school and all the professionals who have been involved in meeting your child’s special educational needs. Provision discussed may include mainstream secondary school (usually with support), local special school provision or, in exceptional situations, for children with highly complex and/or profound needs, a more highly specialised provision.
- Parents will be asked to express a preference for the school of their choice. If they are unable to express a preference at the time of the review, they will need to let their child’s caseworker know as soon as possible.
- Parents can request that the Local Authority names the maintained all-ability secondary school that they would like their child to transfer to. This does not need to be related to proximity or where siblings attend. However, all Bromley secondary schools aim to meet special educational needs equally and parents are encouraged to visit their local secondary school and discuss their child’s needs with the staff at that school.
- If a child's annual review recommends that they transfer to a mainstream school, parents do not make an application in the usual way. The child's SEN Caseworker will write to the Head Teacher and Governing Body of the preferred school asking them to consider whether their school is suitable for the child, whether their attendance is compatible with the efficient education of other children already there and with the efficient use of the Local Authority resources.
- Before naming a school on a Statement, the Local Authority must give due consideration to the views of the Head Teacher and Governing Body. The final decision as to whether to name the school on a child’s statement is the responsibility of the Local Authority.
