main content Special Provision in Bromley Local Education Authority

All mainstream schools in Bromley provide for children with special educational needs. It is the responsibility of the school to ensure their needs are met. Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs may require additional provision to meet their needs and this is usually funded by the LA. If your child needs special facilities that can only be provided in a few places, admission to a special school or an additionally resourced mainstream school (ARMS) may be the most appropriate option.  In Bromley there are additionally resourced mainstream schools which cater for a range of special educational needs.

Eligibility

Admissions to special schools and additionally resourced mainstream schools are agreed and arranged by the Special Educational Needs Group. A statutory assessment of your child’s needs is usually required for consideration for specialist provision. Children will:

  • be aged from four years to nineteen years of age
  • live in the London Borough of Bromley. (If the child does not live in Bromley then application should be made to your own LA.)

Details

  • Children with more complex and profound special educational needs may require more specialist provision.
  • Special schools and additionally resourced mainstream schools (ARMS) may have all or some of the following: smaller classes, teachers with special training, special equipment and teaching methods, extra support, (e.g. nursing support, special support assistants) and/or regular visits from specialists.
  • Admissions to special schools and ARMS are agreed and arranged by the Special Educational Needs Group. They are usually arranged at the time when the Statement of Special Educational Needs is made or on transfer from another school or ARMS. The need for specialist provision is usually discussed in a planning or review meeting involving parents and professionals involved with a child. If it has been proposed that your child attends a special school or ARMS, you are encouraged to visit the special provision and discuss your child’s needs with the staff before admission is arranged.

Next Steps

When the Statutory Assessment reaches a conclusion and it has been agreed that a Statement of Special Educational Needs is required, you will receive the Proposed Statement and have the opportunity to discuss with a member of the SEN Team the type of provision that will meet your child’s needs.
