We have a large area of natural and built heritage to manage and protect. Conservation of the environment, in all these forms, is a priority for the Council. Bromley is fortunate in having countryside covering over half its total area, whilst the built environment includes a wide range of historic buildings, features and places.

There are many initiatives, plans and policies in place to help us conserve our valuable places. These include:

• the Bromley Biodiversity Action Plan (BBAP) provides a plan of action to conserve, protect and enhance biodiversity in the borough;
• sites of landscape and wildlife value such as SINCs and the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB);
• specific powers to protect trees, groups of trees and woodlands;
• the proposed 'Darwin at Downe' World Heritage Site;
• Conservation Area designations help conserve areas of buildings and associated trees and spaces;
• Listed Building designation assists the Council to manage change to built heritage.

The annual 'Bromley Environmental Awards' reward and promote local sustainable initiatives, including conservation of historic buildings and enhancement of wildlife habitats.
