main content What is the Food Standards Agency?

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is an independent Government agency, providing advice and information to the public, local and central Government on food safety, nutrition and diet. It also acts as an independent watchdog overseeing the enforcement role of all local councils.

The Agency was created to protect public health and consumer interests in relation to food.

The Agency's advice is based on best scientific evidence available from independent expert advisory committees, and all its advice is made public.

The Food Standards Agency is also responsible for issuing food alerts, where it knows or suspects that there are safety problems with a particular type of food.
