Private drainage problems
If you are having problems with your own drainage or the drainage on a neighbouring property, contact us and we may be able to advise or assist if appropriate.
Details
We may be able to assist with:
- identifying drainage systems, including advice on who is responsible for maintenance, repair and improvement of the drain or sewer. This includes site visits where necessary (free service)
- carrying out drainage investigations using CCTV equipment to identify defects (chargeable service)
- investigating incidents of pollution associated with incorrect drainage systems
- formal action to rectify defects causing nuisance or pollution
Next steps
First, decide whether Thames Water Utilities (TWU) is responsible for the drain or sewer. TWU is responsible for main sewers in the road and what are termed public sewers. A public sewer is one which serves more than one property (curtilage) and the properties served were constructed before 1 October 1937 (N.B. blocks of flats or a house converted into flats is one property). If the sewer is the responsibility of TWU, then contact them directly for assistance.
Any other drain or sewer is the responsibility of its owner(s). This responsibility extends out under roads until, and including, where the drain or sewer connects with the main sewer. In this case contact us.
