Use of electricity at work
If you are using electricity at work, then we can offer help and advice on the controls you may need to use. We can also discuss the electrical hazard you are exposed to at work and give advice on appropriate safety precautions. In some cases we may need to visit your workplace to assess how electricity is being provided and used.
Details
Electricity is used at work to power lighting and heating for a comfortable and safe working environment. It is also used to provide power for work equipment. Work equipment can range from heavy machine tools like those used in a wood timber yard to a desktop computer. If used correctly electricity is safe.
If we come into personal contact with electricity, injury can range from a mild electric shock to electrocution.
Employers should ensure the network of wires located under floors, within walls and above ceilings used to carry electricity around their workplace is maintained in a safe condition. This network of wires is called the fixed electrical installation system and should be tested and examined regularly by an electrician.
Employers should also take steps to ensure any electrical equipment used in their workplace is suitable for the work it is being used for and maintained in a safe condition. Items of equipment permanently connected to the electrical supply are called fixed appliances e.g. wall heaters. These should be inspected at the same time as the fixed electrical installation or in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Portable appliances are items of work equipment fitted with an electrical plug and can be moved around the workplace. These should also be inspected regularly by a competent person.
Where metal fixtures or fittings are provided in close proximity to electrical equipment e.g. a commercial kitchen, these for reason of safety should, ideally, be connected to mains earth.
You should approach your employer if you suspect that you are being exposed to risk of electric shock at work without proper safety controls in place.
