main content Applying for planning permission

If you wish to build, extend or demolish a property or develop a building or piece of land you may need to apply for planning permission. You may also need to apply for other consents from the Council should your property be a Listed Building or lie within a Conservation Area. Contact us and we can help guide you through the application process.

Details

We can give an informal opinion about whether you need to apply for planning permission. If you require a formal decision you will need to apply for a Lawful Development Certificate. Most planning applications are dealt with within the Government’s eight-week target although some applications can take considerably longer. You may need planning permission:

  • for a new building or for changes to an existing building
  • to change the use of a building or land.

It is now a legal requirement that planning applications are accompanied by a Design and Access Statement, details available here.

Other consents and approvals may be required. When planning permission has been granted, you may also need Building Regulations Consent. For more information see Building Control Services

Details of individual applications can be viewed online. You can also inspect planning applications at the Planning and Engineering Reception.

General guidance about the kinds of work for which you need to apply for planning permission and those for which you do not is available online from the Planning Portal website.

Please note that when you apply for Town Planning approval the detailed plans and other supporting details that you submit with your application will be scanned and published on our website.

Therefore, to enable details to be viewed electronically, all drawings should include key measurements, a scale bar indicating the length of 1 metre and 10 metres where appropriate, and state the drawing scale and page size, e.g. 1:50 at A1.
