Bromley: a living town developing a plan for the next 15 years (consultation 2006)
Bromley Town Centre Area Action Plan
This is an exciting time for Bromley- a time of opportunity and change
Bromley Council is preparing an Area Action Plan to guide development and improvements in the town centre. Over recent months the Council has been working with our consultants EDAW and key organisations to identify development options for the town centre.
Developing the Vision
The Challenge
Bromley Council is concerned that the competitiveness and viability of the town centre is being undermined - highlighted by the recent closure of two department stores. The Council has made the preparation of an Area Action Plan a major priority.
A series of workshops bringing together a wide range of individuals and organisations with local interests - including residents groups, businesses, transport, leisure and emergency services – have highlighted key issues and opportunities and contributed to the preparation of the development options.
The options seek to enhance the town’s competitive position whilst safeguarding its heritage and character
Key Issues
- How can we make Bromley more competitive and distinctive?
- How do we integrate the new with the old?
- How do we deal with the congestion and demand for parking?
- Can we make the town feel safer at night?
Development Options
- Enhanced retail offer
- New opportunities for leisure and culture
- Retail extension of Glades/relocation of leisure centre
- Consolidation of the Civic Centre site
- Mix of uses including housing and new community facilities
- Enhancement of North Village
- New entertainment and leisure focus in Bromley South
- Improved public transport and interchange facilities
- Distinctive architecture including landmark buildings in appropriate locations
- Improved pedestrian environment
- Cultural quarter around library and Churchill Theatre
Opportunities
The plan could have many positive impacts – attracting investment, job creation, new facilities and housing, reducing the potential for anti-social behaviour, improving the quality of the built environment and the efficient use of land, and reducing the need to travel by private car with an increase in walking, cycling and use of public transport.
