Service FAQ questions

main content Household waste collections: FAQs

Why has my waste not been collected?

Did you place your waste at the edge of your curtilage?

Your waste will only be collected if it is placed at the edge of your curtilage.

What does edge of curtilage mean?

Your curtilage is the area of land within your boundary surrounding your property. The edge of your curtilage is on your land at the front, within arm's reach of the pavement but not on it.

Did you put your waste out for collection by 7am in the morning?

Your waste may not be collected if it was not out by 7am.
We try to keep to regular collection times between 7am and 4pm. If you did put out your waste in good time, check the rest of your street. The crew may just be running late.

Remember, a different vehicle calls for your paper, recyclable waste and household waste - have all three vehicles been past your property?

I am unable to carry my own waste - can you help?

We can provide a special service if you are unable to carry your waste to the edge of your curtilage and have no one at home to help.

Contact us, and a Waste Advisor will visit you to discuss your needs. We may also require a medical certificate stating that you are unable to carry your waste to the edge of your curtilage. If you are charged for a certificate, provide us with proof of payment, and we will reimburse the cost.

Can I use a wheeled bin?

At present, we will empty wheeled bins where householders have purchased one for their property.

However, residents should note that we are committed to reducing waste and the use of wheeled bins has been shown to increase waste. It is possible that, in the future, we may restrict the size of acceptable containers.

What can I put out for collection?

Your weekly waste collection service is for waste that can easily fit into a standard-size dustbin. Find out more about how to dispose of bulky waste here.

Your weekly waste collection is for items which cannot be recycled such as:

  • Disposable nappies and domestic heating ash – if they are securely bagged
  • Broken glass or mirrors if safely wrapped and clearly marked “glass”
  • Lightweight DIY waste such as wallpaper and polystyrene tiles. The waste must weigh less than 25kg in total and be no longer than one metre in length.

What can't I put out for collection?

The following items should not be put out for collection:

Can I choose where I put my waste out for collection?

Unfortunately you cannot choose where to place your waste for collection, as the service is an edge-of-curtilage collection service. The Environmental Protection Act section 46 gives councils the power to specify where they will collect waste from.

What can I do about foxes and vermin?

It is the householder’s responsibility to present waste securely. Do you use a bin? If not, try using two black sacks instead of one or a thicker, better-tied sack.

What day will my waste and recycling be collected?

Please view the waste and recycling days schedule.
