We are committed to Recycling for All, our strategy for increasing recycling opportunities for residents. As part of this, we provide a fortnightly recycling collection service for all households, including flats. We also carry out a number of recycling trials, and we will contact you directly if these affect you. Information on our latest trial, Composting for All.
Recycling should be put out for collection by 7am on your collection day at the edge of your property, within arm's length of the pavement, if you live in a house. Flats generally have a shared area for recycling bins, normally near the refuse bins. Please contact us if your recycling collection is missed, or you need a new recycling box.
Details
For houses, we provide black boxes to recycle paper and card, and green boxes to recycle glass, plastic bottles, tins, cans and aluminium foil.
Flats are provided with bulk recycling bins generally stored in the communal area, where you can recycling paper, card, glass, plastic bottles, tins and cans. Please contact us if you live in a building where there are eight flats or more and you have not been provided with bulk recycling bins.
Items that can be recycled in your black boxes (or bulk bin labelled 'paper' for flats) are:
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Catalogues
- Phone books
- Cardboard (flattened)
- Pizza boxes
- Cardboard tubes (e.g. toilet roll)
- Cards (birthday, Christmas)
- Cereal boxes
- Detergent and washing powder boxes
- Egg cartons
- Envelopes and junk mail
- Kitchen roll
- Paper bags
- Paper plates (unsoiled)
- Shredded paper
We cannot accept hardback books, drinks and milk cartons or large cardboard boxes.
Items that can be recycled in your green boxes (or bulk bin labelled 'plastic bottles, tins, cans and glass' for flats) are:
- Milk bottles
- Drink bottles
- Detergent bottles
- Drink cans
- Food tins
- Aerosol cans
- Glass bottles (all colours)
- Glass jars (all colours)
- Plastic bottles
- Aluminium foil
We cannot accept plastic dishes and packaging, yoghurt pots, plastic bags, other metal, Pyrex, drinking glasses, crockery, and broken or window glass.
We can only recycle plastic bottles at present; this is because there are very limited opportunities for recycling certain types of plastics. However, we are always researching new markets for recycling, so the range of products that we can recycle is expanding all the time. We will let you know when we can recycle more.
Please note that, as part of our commitment to the environment, we will take measures against residents who persistently refuse to use our recycling service. If households persistently and deliberately fail to recycle, ultimately we won’t collect their un-separated waste and householders could face fines or even prosecution under the Environmental Protection Act (1990).
