The Council’s housing service are helping people to access the Governments mortgage rescue scheme, which will help to prevent some people becoming homeless. Where residents are being threatened with repossession, the scheme works with housing associations and debt advice agencies to purchase the freehold or a share of the property. This scheme will not suit everyone, but is available as a housing option. You wil be eligible for this scheme if;
- you are at risk of homelessness as a result of mortgage repossession through no obvious fault of your own,
- the property is your principal home and is valued under £295,000 (this figure is under review),
- your combined household income is less than £60,000 per year,
- your property is not in negative equity and does not have any outstanding charges or disputes attached to it,
- all other options available to stop the eviction have been exhausted,
- you are eligible under the homeless criteria (for further information about these criteria, please see our guide to homelessness.)
