Taking action against climate change
Tackling the effects of climate change needs to be a joint effort. A number of actions are taking place across the borough to reduce the impact of climate change.
Who is taking action on climate change?
Climate change is being tackled by various parties these include:
The Government
The UK government, along with the international community, has set stringent targets to reduce of greenhouse gas emissions. This is primarily aimed at heavy industry such as power generation and large-scale manufacturing.
Businesses
Many businesses now realise that energy costs and climate change can have significant impacts on their profits. As a result companies like BskyB, HSBC and the Co-op are taking significant action to improve energy efficiency and also installing renewable technology.

Bromley Council
The Council has a number of initiatives to reduce the impact of the climate change:
Residents
You can do your bit to help reduce the impact of climate change by following these simple tips:
Lighting: Switch off lights when they are not needed. Use energy efficient light bulbs - they cost around £5, last many years, and can save you money on your lighting.
Heating: Turn your central heating down by one degree. Turn your hot water thermostat down to 60 degrees – it doesn’t need to be scalding.
Appliances: Try not to leave thing like TVs and computers on standby; they use about half as much electricity as if they were on.
Washing: Many clothes can now be washed at lower temperatures. Try washing at cooler temperatures to reduce the amount of energy required for heating. Air-dry clothes on a clotheshorse or use the washing line - your clothes will also last longer this way.
Transport: Why not consider purchasing a car that uses alternative fuels or convert your existing vehicle to take these fuels? Further information on fuelling stations that supply alternative fuels. Alternatively, beat the jams and the increasing cost of fuel by using public transport. You could also try walking for short journeys such as to buy the paper or a pint of milk. Many schools now organise ‘walking buses’ for children.
