main content Renewable energy grants - Low Carbon Buildings Programme

Renewable energy grants are available from the Government to contribute towards the cost of installing solar water heating, solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, small-scale hydro turbines, ground/water/air source heat pumps, bio-energy, renewable CHP, Micro CHP and fuel cells.

Eligibility

Grants are available to homeowners, community organisations, schools, the public sector and businesses.

You must take certain energy-efficiency measures before you are eligible to apply for a grant under the low carbon buildings programme. These measures will ensure that you are minimising your energy requirements and are as follows:

  • a minimum of 270mm of loft insulation, mineral fibre or equivalent should be fitted
  • cavity wall insulation must be installed (if you have cavity walls)
  • low energy lightbulbs must be used in all appropriate light fittings
  • your heating system must have basic controls, including a room thermostat and a programmer or timer.

The installation must be designed, installed and commissioned by an Accredited Installer (DIY installations will not attract a grant).

You must obtain all necessary consents and statutory approvals (e.g. building control and planning permission)

For full eligibility criteria please go to the Low Carbon Buildings Programme website.
