If you think you or your family are living in overcrowded conditions, contact us and we will try to help you. We will, where possible, remedy 'statutory overcrowding' and may consider legal action in some cases.
Details
Overcrowding is legally defined as “when there are not enough rooms or space in the home for the number of people who live there”. If you contact us we can arrange to assess your situation and try to resolve it.
The assessment process takes into account the number of rooms, their sizes and the genders of the occupants. If, as a result of the assessment, your home is defined as overcrowded, we can advise you of the options available to you. In some cases overcrowding can be avoided by making internal alterations, for example, by extending or enlarging your property or by increasing the numbers of rooms in your property.
If you are a tenant living in crowded conditions you can consider moving to a more suitably sized property, with the assistance of your agent, landlord or other accommodation agencies.
If you are a tenant of a social landlord, you may find your landlord operates one or more schemes to help you find more suitable accommodation. To find out more contact your Housing Officer. You may also contact us for further independent advice and or assistance.
We also provide landlords and managing agents with information and advice about overcrowding and we carry out overcrowding assessments.
Further information overcrowding is available on the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s website.
