Advice for homeless people and those threatened with homelessness is available from the Council's Housing Options and Advice Team and the 3 Citizens Advice Bureaux in the borough. The duties of the Council towards homeless people are set out in law. The Council must advise and help anyone who is homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. The help given depends on the person`s circumstances and whether the Council has a duty to ensure that they get accommodation.
Eligibility
You may qualify for help in obtaining accommodation if we find you are homeless through no fault of your own.
You must not be subject to immigration control, and you must be a resident of the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
Eligible applicants include:
- families with dependent children (a child under 16 years, or under 19 if in full-time education or training, living at home and unable to support themselves)
- pregnant women
- some 16/17 year olds
- people who are vulnerable due to:
- old age,
- mental illness, physical disability or learning disability
- violence or threats of violence
- leaving prison
- leaving the Armed Forces
- young people being looked after, accommodated or fostered by the local authority
- people made homeless through fire, flood, or some other emergency that makes their present accommodation uninhabitable. They will be offered accommodation for a short period until they can make their own arrangements or return to their property.
Details
What help will be offered?
If we have no duty to house you, the Housing Options and Advice Team will offer advice to help prevent you losing your home or to help you find alternative accommodation.
If the Council does have a duty to ensure that you obtain accommodation, you will be offered advice and if you are literally homeless you may be offered temporary accommodation. This may be a place in a hostel or bed and breakfast hotel. The Council will only make one offer of temporary accommodation. If you do not accept this offer, the Council may refuse to provide any further assistance.
You have the right to ask for a review of the decision made on your application.
