main content Supported housing placements

Two forms of supported housing placements are available to young people through the team: a supported hostel placement through a housing association or a supported placement with a host family. Supported housing placements enable you to gain the independent living skills you will need to hold and manage a tenancy successfully. Both types of placement are subject to regular reviews.  For more information on this, please follow the link above.

Host family placement (LATCH)

Young people placed in this type of accommodation are provided with a bedroom in a house owned by a person who is experienced in working with young people. You will normally have access to the lounge, kitchen, toilet and bathroom facilities in the property.

Living with a host family can be extremely beneficial as you will be able to have support with your housing needs as well as help in accessing other areas such as education, training and employment.

Supported hostel placements

The supported hostel placements offer a bedsit-type room. You share communal areas such as kitchen, sitting area, bathroom and toilet facilities with other residents in the scheme. Some supported hostels offer bedsits that also have a private kitchen area in the room.

Permanent accommodation

We offer permanent accommodation to young people who are able to live independently after the age of 18. This offer will be in the form of a starter tenancy for a studio flat or one-bedroom property. Please note that due to the high demand for social housing, it could take up to 24 months for you to get a permanent offer of accommodation after you have reached 18 years of age.

Resettlement period

When you get an offer of permanent accommodation, a Support and Resettlement Officer from the Support and Resettlement team (Young Persons Section) will provide support for up to two months.

During this period the Support and Resettlement Officer will:

  • draw up a resettlement plan
  • assist in filling out forms such as council tax, community care grant, housing benefits
  • get utilities such as electricity and gas set up for you as tenant
  • accompany you to interviews and appointments for housing
  • help you to settle in the local community by providing local support services information.
As well as the key points above, the officer will deal with any issues you may come across whilst you start your tenancy.

After two months the support will cease and your file will be closed, once you are successfully settled and able to manage your tenancy.
