The supporting people programme funds housing related support to people who need some assistance to continue to live independently and to enable people to acquire the skills to move into their own tenancies and to sustain them. The programme benefits both people living in supported housing, sheltered housing and those living in their own homes.

The programme provides housing related support to prevent problems that can often lead to hospitalisation, institutional care or homelessness and can help the smooth transition to independent living for those leaving an institutionalised environment.

Examples of housing related support services include assistance to ensure an individual is accessing the correct benefit entitlements, assistance to gain the skills to maintain their own tenancy, accessing home improvements.

Who is a vulnerable person?

People who may be vulnerable include:

What is housing-related support?

This is the service that a landlord, or somebody who works for them, such as a warden or support worker, provides for vulnerable people to help them to remain independent.

Types of services include those where accommodation and support are part of the overall service - such as a sheltered housing scheme, a hostel or a refuge. Alternatively people may remain in their own home and receive support from an outside agency.
