This page gives advice and information about using PDF files which are loaded on this website.

PDF files

Some information on this website is available in PDF format. This tends to be council documents and publications which are provided in addition to webpages.

PDF stands for 'Portable Document format'. It was created by Adobe to allow a person to view and print a file exactly as the author designed it. It preserves the look and feel of the original document.

You need to have a copy of Acrobat Reader on your computer to download these files. The reader is available free of charge from the Adobe website.

Follow the instructions on the Adobe site to download the appropriate reader for your computer.

Visual impairment

If you use a screen reader there are useful online tools available on the Access Adobe website which will convert PDF documents into a web page (HTML) or text.

Problems downloading PDFs

If you have problems downloading a PDF (for example, the document 'freezes', or it loads incomplete information or blank pages), these suggestions may help:

  • Window users: right click the link to the pdf document. (Mac users: click and hold on the PDF link).
  • From the pop-up menu select Save Target As (some browsers may have 'save link as...' or 'save file as...').
  • A small window will open and you will be prompted to select where on your computer you want to save the file.
  • Select a location and click save or OK. The PDF will be downloaded and saved on your computer.
  • Once the file is saved you can open it using Adobe Acrobat Reader (this can be downloaded free from the Adobe website)

There can be problems using Acrobat Reader 4.0 from Internet Explorer 5 (IE). You can resolve this by either:

  • following these steps:
  • open Acrobat Reader
  • under the file menu, select Preferences - General
  • under "options," uncheck the "Web Browser Integration" box
  • click OK , or
  • upgrading your IE browser and Acrobat Reader software.
