Group Environment Award
West Wickham Residents Association - 2005 winner
75 not out! Our group award winner has been supporting local residents for three quarters of a century.
Working in partnership with Countryside Management Services - and even managing to recruit Council litter pickers - in September 2004 this group collected fifty sacks of rubbish, shopping trolleys, parking cones and dumped furniture from land between Corkscrew Hill and the adjacent playing fields. They also cut back undergrowth surrounding the local war memorial and organised the removal of graffiti so that nothing could mar the dignity of Remembrance Sunday. This was followed by a mammoth spring clean in both Blakes park and at a sheltered housing development near West Wickham Station.
Our judges felt that the 'direct action' of this group 'had made a real improvement to the environment and showed just how much could be done with community involvement".
