Drainage problems

If you are having problems with your own drainage or the drainage on a neighbouring property, it will either be your responsibility or that of Thames Water Utilities (TWU). We may be able to help with incidents of pollution.

Who is responsible for your drains and sewers

The responsibility for drainage in Bromley falls under either the householder or Thames Water Utilities. If you are having problems with your own drainage on your property then it may be your responsibility to clear any blockages and carry out any repairs. However Thames Water Utilities (TWU) is responsible for main sewers in the road and what are termed public sewers. A public sewer is one which serves more than one property (curtilage)  (N.B. blocks of flats or a house converted into flats is one property). If the sewer is the responsibility of TWU, then contact them directly for assistance.

What we will do

We may be able to assist with:

  • carrying out drainage investigations using CCTV equipment to identify defects (chargeable service)
  • investigating incidents of pollution associated with incorrect drainage systems
  • formal action to rectify defects causing nuisance or pollution

We may also intervene on behalf of private tenants, who do not own their property. For example if  you are a tenant and your landlord refuses to clear or repair a private drain that is not the responsibility of TWU, then contact our Housing Enforcement team and they may be able to assist.
