Healthy lifestyle schemes in parks and open spaces
We are working in partnership with other organisations to improve resident's health and wellbeing through conservation and landscape maintenance work in their local community. Below is a list of schemes that are currently being held across the Borough.
This is aimed at improving mental and physical wellbeing through growing projects based at Poverest Allotments. The group grow fruit and vegetables and learn about propagation, soil preparation, composting, building raised beds, crop rotation, identifying weeds, creating insect habitats and much more. To find out more, please contact us.
Brook Lane Community Garden
The community garden offers opportunities for people young and old to learn through doing, developing cultivation skills and how to manage habitat(s) that support wildlife. The scheme is a joint venture between partner organisations, including Nash College and JustB. To find out more please contact us.
Whitehall Green Gym
Whitehall Green Gym volunteers meet every Monday from 10.45am until 2pm at Whitehall Recreation Ground, Southlands Road entrance, to work on key areas of the park to enhance wildlife biodiversity and bring extra colour and vibrancy to the park. Green Gyms are fun outdoor sessions where you will be guided in practical conservation activities but unlike other conservation projects, the emphasis is very much on health and fitness. In fact, almost a third more calories can be burnt in some Green Gym sessions than in an average aerobics class! At the beginning of each session everyone does a few minutes of gentle exercise to warm up, in preparation for a range of activities to suit all abilities. We do the same at the end of the session to help you gently cool down. And there’s a sociable tea break in the middle of every session.
