Woodland minibeasts (KS2)*

Pupils will gain an awareness of the woodland and/or meadow habitats in which invertebrates are adapted to live.

Description

This course is a series of investigations beginning with trying to discover whether minibeasts live in the same micro-habitats, then to find out what life is like in a woodland from the viewpoint of a minibeast, and to put into practice detecting skills required as a scientist to gain an insight into some of their adaptations.  Emphasis is also on variation and classification. 

Areas covered

  • setting the background to the investigation
  • difference between vertebrates and invertebrates 
  • awareness activities to give some insight into life as minibeasts
  • variety of sampling techniques to look at some of the many different micro-habitats
  • handling and care of invertebrates
  • collection of invertebrates - look at numbers in different habitats
  • Observational skills to look at invertebrate adaptations; identification and classification of major groups; feeding groups leading to simple food chains.

    Can be combined to include pond-dwelling minibeasts.
