AS/2 level courses

Freshwater ecology (KS4 AS/2)

Students are introduced to the techniques used to study freshwater ecology. The session then focuses on a detailed examination of a pond ecosystem. Participants will be able to study the population dynamics of the pond and analyse the data obtained to develop an understanding of energy flow within a particular ecosystem.

Areas covered

  • Identification to at least genus level of freshwater vertebrates, invertebrates and aquatic plants
  • Freshwater sampling for vertebrates and invertebrates
  • Measurement of biotic and abiotic factors, using chemical testing kits, and use of this data to assess water quality
  • Producing pyramids of biomass for the ecosystem to study energy flow.
